In Memory Of Ricky Morris  20.03.68 - 29.11.87

                                                                     Craig Minogue

Craig Minogue was in Jika Jika on the 29th October 1987 and he participated in the barricade, fire and protest in Unit 4 that lead to the deaths of 5 men, he and 3 others survived.Craig gave evidence over a number of days at the Inquest into the Deaths. He also gave evidence at the Inquest into the Death of another prisoner in Jika Jika.{When other prisoners refused to give evidence for fear of retaliation from prison guards, craig claimed that the prison had murdered the prisoner, and there is some support for that, see Bree Carlton's, Imprisoning Resistance: Life and Death in an Australian Supermax. The federation press, Annandale NSW 2007.}Craig's evidence, which was consistent with evidence of other Jika prisoners, was later corroborated by the evidence as a whole. The state Coroner of Victoria found in relation to the Deaths of 5 men in Jika Jika, that Corrections Victoria was 'Moribound and Corrupt'.Craig has been helpful in my search for information about what happened in Jika Jika in 1987, i found him to be a nice fellar. We communicate via letters and when i go to Melbourne  i always go and visit him and it has been a journey but all has worked out well, we have had deep conversations and i guess at times felt sadness & anger with what we have spoke about but we always have gotton through it with a laugh.I am aware Craig has a past but for me thats what it is his past i make no judgment upon him for it, today i have a new friend and im happy to have met him.Apart from the crimes that Craig committed, i have discovered that he has become a jail house lawyer who assist his fellow prisoner with equitable access to the courts, information about the law, and education programs. In 2005 he completed his first formal scholastic achievement a BA {Hons}.He is now working on a PhD in Applied Ethics and Moral Philosophy.Craig is also a regular contributor to community legal education projects and he has publications in the fields of Philosophy, Literature, Criminal Law, Human Rights and Prison issues.

Craig has asked me if i could add a quote for him about Jika, i agreed so here it is.

Jika looked more humane, and it did look and smell a hell of alot better than 'H' Div with its piss buckets. Jika Jika however, attacked the soul, not the sense. The brutality of Jika came within,a physical design that was psychologically cancerous,it ate away at us,until the end all we could do to survive was throw ourselves physically at it in a last ditch effort. It was survive or perish, that's wat Jika reduced us to.That i and many others survived Jika is because we men in unit 4 in october 1987 took the decision to resist.Jika would have killed me,and it would of killed everyone there on a long enough time line. That i survived the 20 years since then, that i have in someway thrived in that 20 years, is due directly to thae fact that Robert,Arthur,Jimmy,Ricky and Dave gave their lives in the ultimate act of resistance, may they rest in peace.
